Victorian terrace, Stoke Newington

This colour-rich kitchen was thoughtfully crafted for a couple, both architects, who undertook a significant renovation of their classic Victorian London terraced house. Seeking to breathe new life into their home of 15 years, they set about reimagining day to day life in the space. The most dramatic transformation began in the kitchen. Once confined to a dark lower ground floor rear return, it now graces the light and airy front room on the upper ground floor, connecting it to the neighbouring dining area.

Starting with reclaimed beech strip flooring, the couple were keen to push boundaries with the colour scheme, a contemporary contrast to the kitchen’s original, ornate cornicing. They worked with Uncommon Projects to achieve a joyful and timeless space. Mint green became the anchor, inspiring a search for strong, complementary shades. Red doors with subtle pink undertones were chosen to create a lively contrast against the green and oak-veneered cabinets, while pale pink doors became the unifying shade. Uncommon Projects were careful to ensure that this harmonious trio would be visible from every angle in the room.

The kitchen's layout revolves around an 800mm-wide central cooking island, its simple white Corian worktop enhancing the play of light within the kitchen. Adjacent, turning an awkward chimney breast wall into a uniform block, tall cabinets seamlessly combine with open shelving and practical cupboard space. This problem-solving, multi-use piece housing appliances, books and kitchen essentials exemplifies Uncommon Projects’ creative approach to functionality; each and every detail fine-tuned to create a space that ticks all the client’s boxes.
