Victorian terrace, Harringay

When Uncommon Projects first met the owners of this north London Victorian terrace, they were about to embark on an extension to fill in the side of their narrow rear return with a long linear kitchen under new skylights. The dining table was going to be placed in the darkest part of the room.

Uncommon Projects suggested the plan could be reworked to take better advantage of the natural light and views to the garden. They moved the dining table into the extension and an island was added so it could become a focal point in the room and make an ergonomic space in which to cook.

The island features a Bora hob that faces the dining table, creating a more sociable plan. The sink area is framed by a tall pocket door pantry cupboard on one side and the ovens and fridge on the other.

An important part of the brief was to create lots of display space for the clients’ own ceramics and to avoid a neutral colour palette. Uncommon Projects incorporated lots of open shelving within the furniture and on top of the wall cabinets.

As this was a busy family kitchen, the client wanted finishes that are hard wearing. Therefore, they chose from a selection of matt laminates, settling on the coral and pale pink colours for the sliding doors on the island and wall units against a backdrop of inky blue doors.

Lastly, to anchor the dining table and maximize circulation space, Uncommon Projects designed a built-in bench for the dining area, with integrated vinyl and record player storage.
